If you answered "B) 1914," you are correct!

Multiple-choice questions have been around for more than 100 years! There are plenty of helpful strategies for approaching these types of questions. Below are some tips that can help you become a master of multiple-choice!

Read Carefully

It's tempting to read the answers before reading the full question, but try not to. It's not the game show Jeopardy!. It's way better to look for the answer in the question than to assume the question by looking at the answers.

Also, watch out for qualifying words such as always and never. They might show up in either the question or the answers and are often a clue about which answer is correct.

Answer First, Select Second

Before looking at the answers, try to answer the question on your own first. If your answer is one of the options, chances are you've got a winner!

Process of Elimination

If you don't know the correct answer, you may still be able to dismiss incorrect options. You can often eliminate answers that are irrelevant, unreasonable, or duplicates. Ruling these out narrows your focus and improves your odds of answering correctly.

Context Clues

Another great way to figure out the answer is to use context clues. Is there an option that shares something in common with the question? Things like using the same verb tense can lead you to the right response.

Time Management

Don't hesitate to move on if you are unsure which answer to select! This maximizes the number of questions you can correctly answer. Then, go back to questions you didn't know. Leave the hardest questions for last. It doesn't hurt to give it your best guess if you're running out of time and still have unanswered questions. At worst, you often have a 20%-25% chance of getting those questions right by guessing!
